Corolla Sedan
Few cars can claim the legacy of popularity, customer satisfaction, and longevity that the Toyota Corolla enjoys. This compact sedan is defined by decades of strong sales and happy drivers, stretching back to its United States debut in 1968. Toyota knows not to fix what isn’t broken, which explains the combination of an easy-driving nature, fuel economy reaching as high as 41 miles per gallon, and overall bang for your buck (the Corolla Sedan is priced lower than the rival Honda Civic and Mazda3). The full lineup receives an advanced safety technology suite with a minimum of seven driver-assist features, including a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert that’s just been made standard this model year. All three trims get a larger digital gauge cluster (7 inches for the LE and SE and 12.3 inches for the XSE) this time around.

With just three trim levels – the LE, SE, and XSE – the Corolla Sedan won’t weight down its buyers with a hard decision on which to pick. Its reliable powertrain pairs a 169-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a continuously variable transmission; the XSE adds paddle shifters. This front-wheel-drive stalwart continues to supply great fuel economy, led by the LE’s EPA-estimated 32 mpg city and 41 mpg highway. The SE follows with a rating of 31 city/40 highway, while the XSE is good for 31 city/38 highway. The driver can use the standard drive-mode selector to run between Normal and Eco settings; a Sport setting is added to the SE and the XSE, which both also upgrade to a multilink rear suspension.
Standard Features
The LE mixes in a few surprises – such as remote keyless entry and LED exterior lighting – with its entry-level roster of features. It also has single-zone automatic climate control, LED taillights and daytime running lights (DRLs), power-adjustable side-view mirrors, a 7-inch digital gauge cluster, four USB ports (two front/two rear), a 12V outlet, and 16-inch steel wheels with covers. The SE adds comfort and style with a sport mesh grille, metallic rocker panels, dual exhaust tips (chrome), a color-keyed rear spoiler, sport seats featuring complementary fabric inserts, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, chrome door handles, accent lighting on the DRLs, a smart key system, heated power-adjustable side mirrors, and 18-inch alloy wheels with a graphite-hued finish. The XSE stacks up even more upgrades, such as a power sliding moonroof, a wireless device charging pad, SofTex simulated leather upholstery, heated front sport seats with sport fabric inserts, an eight-way power driver’s seat, a leather-trimmed steering wheel with paddle shifters, and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster.
Advanced Driver Aids and Safety Technology
Toyota builds the Corolla Sedan to safeguard its occupants with high-tensile-strength steel body panels, front and rear crumple zones, whiplash-injury-lessening technology, an energy-absorbing collapsible steering column, an array of 10 airbags, and the proprietary Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. This standard technology suite contains automatic high beams, dynamic radar cruise control, lane tracing assist, lane departure alert with steering assist, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and road sign assist. Every trim also gets the blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert that we mentioned in the intro.
Infotainment and Connectivity
The first two Corolla four-door trims receive the default infotainment system, anchored by an 8-inch color touchscreen and a six-speaker sound system. Wireless smartphone connectivity (Android Auto and Apple CarPlay) come standard along with Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, SiriusXM satellite radio, and access to Toyota connected car services. The XSE graduates to a 10.5-inch color touchscreen and becomes eligible for a deluxe JBL sound system upgrade with nine speakers, a subwoofer, and an amplifier.
