Few models in automotive history have enjoyed success like the RAV4: after three-plus decades of consistent popularity, it’s now the top-selling compact utility vehicle in the United States. It would seem, then, that Toyota wouldn’t need to make many changes, yet they’ve gone ahead and redesigned it for 2026. One of the major points of this sixth generation is that the RAV4 has gone completely hybrid: there’s no longer a gas-only powertrain offered. That means every trim now puts out 236 combined horsepower – a decent increase over the 2025 RAV4 Hybrid’s 219 hp and the conventional gas-only version’s 213 hp. It’s a pleasant surprise that the model’s fuel economy now reaches as high as 47 mpg (that’s a 6-mpg improvement over the ’25 RAV4 Hybrid and a 12-mpg gain on the discontinued gas-only RAV4.). Plus, those who use their RAV4 to pull a trailer will be pleased to know that most trims with all-wheel drive now have a towing limit as high as 3,500 pounds—double the capacity of the previous generation.
The 2026 changes are visual as well, with a fresh front fascia that’s more angular than before and boasts a hammerhead-style grille on all but the Woodland, which is differentiated by Rigid Industries fog lights flanking a rectangular grille). The headlights and taillights show off a new look as well, and Toyota has added paint colors called Meteor Shower and Storm Cloud, plus special hues for the rugged Woodland, Urban Rock and Everest.
All trims receive an improved infotainment system with a larger screen than before; it joins a standard 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. For the first time, the base trim gets dual-zone automatic climate control, and all but the two lowest trims now have a wireless device charger (the Limited upgrades to a dual charge pad). The proprietary driver-assist technology array, Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 is standard equipment and now includes proactive drive assist. A blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert and a vehicle proximity notification feature are standard as well. In trim-specific upgrades, a multi-terrain monitor has been added to the Woodland, while the Limited boasts a panoramic glass roof. In other news, look for the 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid to join Toyota’s lineup later in 2026, complete with a special GR version.
