2027 Toyota Highlander Preview Hero

The Highlander helped redefine family transportation when it debuted a quarter century ago. For 2027, Toyota is giving the popular model its biggest makeover yet. This version will kick off the nameplate’s fifth generation while shifting to a fully electric powertrain, marking the first time the Highlander will be offered exclusively as a battery-electric vehicle (BEV). It will also become Toyota’s first three-row BEV built for sale in the United States. Production and sales are expected to begin at the end of this year. In the meantime, we’ve compiled this preview to highlight what we know so far about this exciting and futuristic incarnation of the Highlander.

All-Electric Transition and Powertrain

The fifth-generation Highlander will move away from its gasoline and hybrid powertrains entirely, introducing a fully electric setup across the lineup. Two battery sizes will be offered, depending on the configuration, with outputs from 221 horsepower in the front-wheel-drive version to 338 horsepower in the all-wheel-drive version, thanks to an additional motor positioned on the rear axle.

Range estimates are preliminary and will vary by setup. The combination of FWD and the smaller battery is expected to yield up to 287 miles, while AWD and the larger battery will approach 320 miles. Fast-charging capability will allow a 10% to 80% recharge in about 30 minutes using Level 3/DC fast charging. Toyota will also introduce a North American Charging System (NACS) port, enabling access to the Tesla Supercharger network. This will also be the first time that vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability is found in a Toyota, enabling the Highlander to power external devices or serve as a backup power source in certain situations.

Design and Style

The redesigned Highlander will feature a more aerodynamic shape, a lower roofline, a wider stance, and a longer wheelbase than the outgoing version. Toyota fans will immediately recognize the front end as having the next version of the Hammerhead design language used on the Prius, Camry, and other models. The interior will shift toward a more tech-focused layout, anchored by a central 14-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument display. A built-in drive recorder will make its debut as well. The Highlander will continue to offer three rows of seating, but a six-person configuration will be the default (only the XLE with AWD will be eligible for the second-row bench seat to accommodate a seventh passenger). Toyota estimates cargo volume of 45.6 cubic feet with the third row folded down.

Standard Features

The 2027 Highlander will be presented in two trim packages: XLE and Limited. The base XLE will have a decent list of standard features, highlighted by SofTex leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a 12.3-inch driver information display, second-row captain’s chairs, dual wireless device chargers, and 19-inch wheels with aero caps. Among the Limited’s upgrades will be heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row captain’s chairs, a head-up display, rear sunshades, and a surround-view monitor. The options for both trims will include a panoramic glass roof and JBL premium audio.

Advanced Driver Aids and Safety Technology

Both the XLE and Limited will have the latest Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 system installed. This technology grouping will incorporate updated hardware and expanded detection capabilities, including a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing assist, proactive driving assist, full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, automatic high beams, and road sign assist. A blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert will be standard as well, along with parking assist with automatic braking and rear seat reminder.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Toyota will equip the 2027 Highlander with its latest infotainment system, featuring a 14-inch touchscreen, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and 5G connectivity. Additional technology will include over-the-air updates and a suite of connected services accessible through the Toyota mobile app. Voice controls will be updated with faster response times and expanded functionality.
