Trims and Powertrain

The ‘25 Highlander has five trim choices: LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, and Platinum. The whole lineup is driven by a 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder paired with an 8-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. This powertrain makes 265 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque. Regardless of the trim, the towing capacity reaches up to 5,000 pounds.

The LE, XLE, and Limited get front-wheel drive (FWD) by default, but all-wheel drive (AWD) is available for all three. The XSE and Platinum are made only with AWD. Highlanders with FWD achieve an EPA-estimated 22 mpg city/29 mpg highway, while AWD slightly reduces the estimated ratings to 21 mpg city/28 mpg highway.

Drivers can personalize their experience with the standard drive-mode selector and its settings for Snow, Eco, Sport, and Normal. The XSE and Platinum add a Multi-Terrain Select dial with Rock and Dirt, Mud and Sand, and Normal modes. It’s also worth noting these trims are equipped with Downhill Assist Control and Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD with Driveline Disconnect, and the XSE has a trim-exclusive sport-tuned suspension for optimized handling.

Standard Features

On its exterior, the LE has a height-adjustable power liftgate, a rear washer for the liftgate windshield and backup camera, a windshield wiper de-icer, heated power side mirrors, a smart key system, color-keyed side rocker panels and lower molding, 18-inch painted alloy wheels, and LED lighting (projector headlights/daytime running lights/fog lights/taillights/center high-mount brake light). Its interior features consist of tri-zone automatic climate control with a second-row control panel and second/third-row vents, fabric upholstery, a leather-trimmed steering wheel and shift knob, an in-dash split-level shelf, a roll-top center console with removable utility tray, an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, a 7-inch color LCD multi-information display, five USB ports, two 12V power outlets, 14 beverage holders, 60/40-split sliding and reclining second-row bench seats, and a 60/40-split third-row bench with sliding headrests and reclining capability.

The XLE is upgraded with a hands-free power liftgate, silver-painted roof rails, a power moonroof, synthetic leather seating surfaces (first and second rows), heated front seats, chrome-plated door handles, a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and an 8-way power-adjustable passenger seat, wireless smartphone charging, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, second-row fold-down captain’s chairs with fold-down inboard armrests, second-row sunshades, 18-inch machine-finished alloy wheels, and fold-flat third-row seats with sliding headrests and reclining capability. The XSE gains a 12.3-inch color digital gauge cluster and ambient interior lighting, while its exterior distinguishes itself with a unique front bumper and lower spoiler, a black mesh grille, LED projector headlights with black accents and a strip of LED daytime running lights, 20-inch black alloy wheels, black roof rails, color-keyed side rocker panels with chrome-plated lower trim, black-capped side mirrors, a rear lower bumper in gray metallic finish with chrome-plated lower spoiler trim, and dual chrome-tipped exhaust.

Styling changes onboard the Limited include 20-inch chrome-finished alloy wheels, silver roof rails, a black-painted grille with chrome-plated surround, leather-trimmed seating surfaces (first/second rows), an ornamental dash trim and faux-wood door trim, and metal front-door sills. Plus, this trim adds a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, ventilated front seats, a cargo-area tonneau cover, a 120V power outlet on the back of the center console, high-output LED fog lights, acoustic noise-reducing front-side windows, and side mirrors with power-fold and reverse tilt-down, memory settings, and puddle lights that display the Highlander logo.

The Platinum also sits on 20-inch alloy wheels and has a black-painted grille with chrome-plated surround; however, the front lower bumper is finished in silver, and its exterior is further defined by a panoramic glass roof with a front moonroof, front and rear mudguards, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a rear bumper scuff plate, a strip of LED daytime running lights, and LED projector headlights with an adaptive front-lighting system. The cabin’s highlights are heated second-row seats, a 10-inch color head-up display, a digital rearview mirror with HomeLink, and illuminated metal door sills in front.

Advanced Driver Aids and Safety Technology

The Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ suite is a fixture in the Highlander’s lineup, with every trim getting automatic high beams, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, lane tracing assist, lane departure alert with steering assist, dynamic radar cruise control, and road sign assist. The Limited and Platinum add front/rear parking assist with automatic braking and a backup camera with dynamic gridlines. Only the Platinum is given a panoramic view monitor, which shows the curb view and 360-degree overhead angles when driving in reverse or at low speeds.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Universal multimedia and connectivity features for all ‘25 Highlander SUVs include wireless versions of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, SiriusXM satellite radio, and access to Toyota connected services. The LE through XSE have an 8-inch color touchscreen paired with a six-speaker audio system, while the Limited and Platinum have a 12.3-inch color touchscreen and a JBL premium sound system with 11 speakers, an amplifier, and a subwoofer. Those two topmost grades also come with a one-year trial subscription to Drive Connect, a service that provides cloud navigation with Google Points of Interest, Destination Assist, and Hey, Toyota.
