Configurations and Mechanical Details

Some familiar trim names occupy the 2024 Tacoma lineup: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD Pro. The new TRD PreRunner slots above the SR5, while the pioneering Trailhunter sits near the top of the pack, just below the TRD Pro. With eight versions, Toyota offers everything from a basic work truck to a pickup with world-class off-road abilities.

A new XtraCab configuration with a six-foot cargo bed offers two doors and just two seats (with extra storage space in the back). This variation is available for the SR, SR5, and TRD PreRunner trims. All but the TRD PreRunner are available with a four-door Double Cab configuration with the choice of either a five-foot or six-foot bed.

A turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine making 228 horsepower and 243 lb.-ft. of torque is the power source for the base Tacoma SR. In higher trims, the same powerplant is tuned to produce 278 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft. of torque. Select trims will be available with a six-speed manual transmission with rev-matching and clutch-cancel anti-stall technology (in this case, the engine output is 270 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque). Otherwise, a new eight-speed transmission will complete the powertrain.

The upcoming i-FORCE MAX hybrid powerplant will be released later (spring 2024) as the most powerful engine ever offered in a Tacoma. Its powertrain will pair a 2.4-liter engine with an electric motor for a combined output of 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. The i-FORCE MAX will be an option for the TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited, but it will come standard on the Trailhunter and TRD Pro. Rear-wheel drive is standard on most trims, with four-wheel drive available (and included with select grades).

Standard Features

The long-serving SR trim continues its focus on the essentials with fabric upholstery, LED headlights with auto on/off, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, a manual tilt-and-telescopic steering column, two USB ports, four fixed cargo bed tie-down points, and 17-inch alloy wheels. Enhancements for the SR5 include a color-keyed rear bumper, a Class IV towing hitch receiver, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a deck rail system (a combination of fixed and adjustable cargo tie-down points). The TRD PreRunner brings additional comfort and convenience features, such as automatic climate control, LED fog lights, a 12.3-inch digital instrument display, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat with under-seat storage, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a fold-flat front passenger seat, a lockable rear storage panel with an integrated pegboard, and lockable deep storage compartment. Keeping its off-pavement capabilities in mind, Toyota provides a composite skid plate and underbody fuel tank protection for the PreRunner.

The TRD Sport stands out with unique exterior treatments and 18-inch alloy wheels. It also gets a coil spring multi-link rear suspension, sport-tuned shocks, and LED bed lighting. The mission of the TRD Off-Road is central to its equipment, like Bilstein remote reservoir shocks (with an end stop control valve), a composite front skid plate with underbody protection for the transfer case and fuel tank, and all-terrain tires on 17-inch alloy wheels. A 120-volt AC power supply provides convenience regardless of location.

The Trailhunter combines impressive overlanding capability and premium touches. This trim gets ARB’s Old Man Emu (OME) 4×4 suspension enhanced with forged aluminum upper control arms. Some of the other ARB-branded features include a steel rear bumper with red recovery hooks and a modular cargo bed utility bar with removable MOLLE panels. The Trailhunter’s ruggedness is supported by a high-clearance front bumper, Rigid LED fog lights, steel underbody protection, steel rock rails, a high-mount air intake (low-profile, rear-facing), a high-clearance trail exhaust tip, and 18-inch alloy wheels with 33-inch Goodyear Territory R/T tires. But the Trailhunter isn’t just about off-roading. It has comfort amenities as well, with a power moonroof, Softex upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, eight-way power front seats with lumbar controls, a head-up display, a power-sliding rear window with privacy glass, a digital key (a smartphone app for vehicle access without a physical key), a cargo bed storage box, and wireless device charging.

The TRD Pro incorporates many of the upscale elements of the Trailhunter (such as a power moonroof, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and dual-zone automatic climate control) and extra equipment to support off-road adventures. All TRD Pros have FOX’s new QS3 three-way adjustable internal bypass shocks with remote reservoirs for improved high-speed off-road performance. There are also FOX internal floating piston (IFP) rear bump stops to improve the bottom-out feel.

Luxury and capability aren’t mutually exclusive with the 2024 Tacoma, as the range-topping Limited offers a power moonroof, SofTex seating surfaces, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, eight-way power front seats with lumbar controls, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power-sliding rear window with privacy glass, a head-up display, power running boards, a cargo bed storage box, chrome-finish exhaust tips, sequential LED turn signals, an integrated air compressor, and 18-inch chrome-finish alloy wheels. Towing is also made easier with the included trailer backup guide, trailer camera, and trailer blind-spot monitor.

Advanced Driver Aids and Safety Technology

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is installed on all 2024 Tacomas. This important suite of advanced driver aids includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, adaptive cruise control, road sign assist, automatic high beams, and Proactive Driving Assist (PDA). PDA is a new Toyota technology that supports braking and steering under certain conditions near vehicles, pedestrians, or bicyclists. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are optional on the SR and included with the other grades. A surround-view monitor is standard with the Limited and available on select other trims.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Toyota’s advanced Audio Multimedia system debuted in the recently redesigned Tundra and also finds a home in the 2024 Tacoma. It’s managed via an 8-inch touchscreen for most trims; a 14-inch touchscreen is optional on some grades and standard in the Trailhunter, TRD Pro, and Limited. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity and SiriusXM satellite radio are also standard, and all trims have access to a Wi-Fi hotspot and Toyota Connected Services (for Cloud Navigation, emergency help, and remote features). Most grades come with a four- or six-speaker sound system, while a ten-speaker JBL sound system is optional on select trims and included with the Trailhunter, TRD Pro, and Limited. The JBL upgrade has a portable Bluetooth speaker that’s ruggedized and water-resistant (up to a 3-foot depth) to meet the more taxing demands of adventurers.
