Toyota makes six versions of the Highlander: L, LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, and Platinum. As we said above, a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine is the sole powerplant across the lineup, making 265 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque. Despite the shift away from six-cylinder power, the 2023 Highlander can still tow up to 5,000 pounds when it’s properly equipped. It also has good cargo capacity, ranging from 16 cubic feet with all three rows in use to 84.3 cubic feet when the second and third rows are folded down.
Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard on every trim, with all-wheel drive (AWD) a very popular option. An eight-speed automatic transmission manages either drivetrain. With FWD, the Highlander has EPA-estimated fuel economy of 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. That changes to 21 mpg around town and 28 mpg on the open road with AWD.
The Highlander L comes set up with seating for eight (the middle row is a three-person bench). It also has LED exterior lighting, tri-zone climate control, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, heated power side mirrors, rear privacy glass, fabric upholstery (first and second rows), 60/40-split folding seats (second and third rows), a tilt/telescopic steering column, a 7-inch driver information display, rain-sensing intermittent windshield wipers, and 18-inch alloy wheels. The LE adds a power liftgate, LED fog lights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and an anti-theft system.
A seven-passenger array (with captain’s chairs in the second row) is standard with the XLE (seating for eight is optional). This trim’s other upgrades include a power moonroof, roof rails, SofTex-trimmed first- and second-row seats (leather is available), heated front seats, a ten-way power driver’s seat, a four-way power front passenger seat, second-row sunshades, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The XSE adds a sporty touch to the XLE with a custom-tuned suspension, black exterior trim, unique exterior accents, ambient cabin lighting, a twin-tip exhaust, and 20-inch black-finish alloy wheels.
The Limited takes things even more upscale with standard leather seats (first and second rows), a hands-free liftgate, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a driver’s memory system, a 12.3-inch driver information display, sound-reducing glass for the front side windows, heated power side mirrors with a power-folding feature, a cargo cover, and 20-inch alloy wheels. Buyers of this trim can also opt for the eight-passenger seating arrangement for no additional charge. At the top of the Highlander range is the Platinum, with the features of the Limited plus a power panoramic moonroof, adaptive headlights (which adjust to match the steering), heated second-row seats, a head-up display, and trim-specific exterior accents. A digital rearview mirror is available for this trim.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ is standard on every 2023 Highlander. This collection of advanced driver aids includes pre-collision support with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and road sign assist. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on the LE and higher. Front and rear parking sensors with automatic braking are exclusive to the Limited and Platinum, while a surround-view monitor comes standard on the Platinum and is optional on the Limited.
An 8-inch touchscreen is the standard infotainment display for the L, LE, XLE, and XSE, while the Limited and Platinum get a 12.3-inch unit (optional on the XLE and XSE). The components found across the lineup include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, and multiple USB ports. A six-speaker audio system is standard, but the Limited and Platinum upgrade to an 11-speaker JBL system (this is an option for the XSE). All Highlanders have access to a Wi-Fi hotspot and Toyota Connected Services (which include cloud-based navigation, emergency communications, and remote vehicle diagnostics).
