Toyota Prius vs. Competitors for Sale in Warwick, RI
Ask anybody to name a hybrid car and they’ll most likely respond with the Toyota Prius. After all, this all-time best-selling gas-electric car is the most recognizable symbol of the technology, and it’s been at the forefront of the eco-friendly automotive segment since it debuted around the turn of this century. The biggest news this model year is that all-wheel drive is available on the Prius for the first time. Toyota has also added a standard 7-inch touchscreen display, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, and Safety Connect services to all trims. Still, although the Prius has dominated the gas-electric hybrid market for many years, it now faces some noteworthy competition such as the Honda Insight, Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid, Chevrolet Bolt, and Ford Fusion Hybrid.
Pricing and Warranty Coverage
The 2020 Toyota Prius has a starting MSRP of $24,325, which is lower than what you may expect to pay for such a well-equipped hybrid. Case in point, the Chevrolet Bolt starts at $36,620 and the Ford Fusion Hybrid starts at $28,000. Toyota also has great standard warranty coverage, as all 2020 Prius models come with a 36-month/36,000-mile whole vehicle warranty, 60-month/60,000-mile powertrain warranty, 60-month/unlimited-mile anti-corrosion warranty, and a 96-month/100,000-mile hybrid warranty. It also gets 24 months/25,000 miles of no-cost maintenance, which is not offered by Honda or Hyundai.
Mechanical Features and Fuel Economy
The hybrid powerplant in the 2020 Toyota Prius is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric motor generators. It comes standard with front-wheel drive, but there is an AWD-e variant on two of its trim levels; in this case, there’s an additional electric motor for the rear axle. The available AWD really sets the Prius apart from the competition, as none of these competitors has an AWD option. This makes the 2020 Toyota Prius even more desirable and practical for Northeastern drivers. The 2020 Toyota Prius puts out a respectable 121 horsepower, but fuel efficiency is where it really shines. It gets an EPA-estimated 58 mpg city and 53 mpg highway for a combined 56 mpg, beating the Honda Insight and Ford Fusion’s fuel efficiency by a solid margin.
As with most 2020 vehicles, there’s plenty of great standard and optional safety technology in the hybrids we’re comparing here. The Toyota Prius stands out a bit from the pack due to last year’s (2019) Top Safety Pick designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for exceptional results in government-issued collision tests and its overall crashworthiness. Neither the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid nor the Ford Fusion Hybrid received this designation. Although all of these hybrids get a good array of active safety features, the 2020 Toyota Prius is loaded with great driver-assist features on even its base model, through the Toyota Safety Sense suite (lane departure warning with steering assist, pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, full-speed dynamic cruise control, and a collision warning system with automatic braking). Higher trims of the 2020 Prius add a blind-spot monitor and intelligent clearance sonar with park assist. The Ioniq only gets adaptive cruise control and pedestrian detection on its highest trim. For added protection, the Prius also gets knee airbags for the driver, which are not available on the Honda Insight, and standard active headrests for whiplash protection, which the Fusion Hybrid does not offer.
