2025 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV)

The Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), formerly known as the Prius Prime, continues to offer an appealing blend of electric and hybrid driving for the 2025 model year. This change is part of Toyota’s effort to simplify the naming structure for its models (the RAV4 Prime has been similarly renamed as the RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid). Toyota’s PHEVs boast a compelling combination of all-electric range for daily driving and efficient hybrid operation for road trips.

In addition to its eco-friendly powertrain, the five-seat 2025 Prius PHEV offers hatchback space and versatility. Furthermore, its engaging acceleration time of 6.6 seconds in a zero-to-60 mph dash makes it one of the quickest Toyotas available today. Like all Toyotas, the 2025 Prius PHEV comes with ToyotaCare, which includes two years or 25,000 miles of complimentary scheduled maintenance and 24-hour roadside assistance.

Trims and Powertrain

There are three trim choices for the 2025 Prius Plug-in Hybrid: SE, XSE, and XSE Premium. All of them are front-wheel drive with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a plug-in hybrid system and a lithium-ion battery. The combined horsepower totals 220 and is controlled through an electronic continuously variable transmission (eCVT).

The SE has an all-electric range of up to 44 miles, while the XSE and XSE Premium offer up to 39 miles of purely electric driving. Recharging the battery takes about 4 hours via a Level 2/240-volt charger or approximately 11 hours with a 120-volt system. In hybrid mode, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid SE returns 53 mpg in the city and 51 mpg on the highway, with the higher trims achieving 50 mpg in urban driving and 47 mpg on the open road.

Standard Features

The well-equipped SE comes standard with single-zone climate control, LED exterior lighting, fabric upholstery, and a heated SofTex leatherette-wrapped steering wheel. Its other amenities include proximity keyless entry, push-button start, a tilt-and-telescopic steering column, extendable dual sun visors with illuminated vanity mirrors, a cargo-area cover, heated power side mirrors, a 7-inch top-mounted driving information display, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and 17-inch alloy wheels with covers.

The XSE receives 19-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, an eight-way power driver’s seat, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and six USB ports, including two for the second-row passengers. A fixed-panel glass roof and an app-based digital key are optional. The XSE Premium’s upgrades include a fixed-panel glass roof, heated and ventilated front seats, a power liftgate, a driver’s memory system, a digital key, and wireless device charging. A solar-charging roof is optional, as are heated rear seats and a digital rearview mirror.

Advanced Driver Aids and Safety Technology

All 2025 Prius Plug-in Hybrid trims come standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, a comprehensive suite of advanced driver-assist tech. The list includes pre-collision braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, proactive driving assist, adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assist, safe exit assist, road sign assist, and automatic high beams. The XSE and XSE Premium trims gain front and rear parking sensors with automatic braking (optional with the SE), while a surround-view monitor and advanced parking assist are available options for the XSE Premium. The core safety equipment for every trim includes multiple airbags, anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, hill start assist control, Smart Stop Technology (to minimize unintended acceleration), and a rearview monitor.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The SE and XSE trims have an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, while the XSE Premium upgrades to a 12.3-inch touchscreen (optional on the XSE). Both setups include wireless smartphone connectivity (Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a six-speaker audio system. The XSE Premium stands apart with a premium eight-speaker JBL sound system. Wi-Fi hotspot capability and access to cloud-based navigation and Toyota’s connected services (for emergency help and remote functions) are standard across the lineup.
