2025 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid

Toyota unveiled two new Grand Highlander Hybrid trims for the 2025 model year. The LE slides in as the base trim to provide a cost-conscious option for drivers prioritizing their budgets, while the Nightshade shows off stylish black accents and badging for a distinctive look. The paint palette has been updated as well, with the addition of gray tones called Heavy Metal and Cement for select trims (Coastal Cream has been discontinued).

The Grand Highlander Hybrid joined Toyota’s family of SUVs in 2024 with the Grand Highlander, adding fuel efficiency as high as 36 combined mpg to the Grand Highlander’s versatile and spacious cabin. Drivers seeking more power and performance can find it in the two Hybrid MAX trims, which churn out 362 net combined horsepower (the most of any variant under the Grand Highlander nameplate) and come with additional drive modes for off-road adventures.

Like all 2025 Toyotas, the Grand Highlander Hybrid gives its buyer added value with the bonus of the ToyotaCare no-cost maintenance plan, which covers regular factory-scheduled maintenance (multipoint inspections, tire rotations, and oil changes) for two years or 25,000 miles. Two years of 24-hour roadside assistance with unlimited mileage is included as well.

Trims and Powertrains

The 2025 Grand Highlander Hybrid has six trims to choose from: LE, XLE, Limited, Nightshade, MAX Limited, and MAX Platinum. The standard hybrid powertrain for the LE, XLE, Limited, and Nightshade pairs a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine and two electric motors (generating 245 combined net horsepower and 175 lb.-ft. of torque) with an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (ECVT). The MAX Limited and MAX Platinum’s Hybrid MAX powerplant is differentiated by a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine with dual variable-valve timing, netting 362 combined horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s coupled with a 6-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

All trims are all-wheel drive (AWD) except for the XLT, which comes standard with front-wheel-drive (FWD), with AWD optional. The FWD XLE leads the lineup in fuel efficiency, returning 37 mpg city and 34 mpg highway. It is followed by the AWD LE, XLE, Limited, and Nightshade, which all achieve 36 city/32 highway mpg. The MAX Limited and MAX Platinum each deliver 26 city/27 highway mpg. A drive mode selector allows drivers to choose between Sport, Eco, Normal, EV, and Trail modes in the AWD LE, XLE, Limited, and Nightshade. The FWD XLE loses Trail mode, and the MAX Limited and MAX Platinum add Multi-Terrain Select with Mud & Sand, Rock & Dirt, and Normal modes. The LE, XLE, Limited, and Nightshade have a maximum towing capacity of up to 3,500 pounds, which the MAX Limited and MAX Platinum raise to 5,000 pounds.

Standard Features and Options

The LE comes with fabric upholstery and room for eight passengers, with an 8-way power driver’s seat with lumbar support, a 4-way manual front passenger seat, and two bench seats: a sliding second-row and fixed third-row, both equipped with 60/40-split folding and reclining functionality. This base trim also has analog gauges, a 7-inch digital multi-information display with Toyota’s Predictive Fuel-Efficient Drive, tri-zone air conditioning, remote keyless entry with Smart Key System on all doors and liftgate, a power liftgate, heated side-view mirrors with blind-spot warning indicators, LED headlights and taillights, daytime running lights with automatic on/off, seven USB-C ports (one media, six charging), two 12-volt power outlets, a rear camera washer, a manual day/night rearview mirror, a rear spoiler with LED center-mount stop light, 13 cup/bottle holders, an overhead console with map lights and sunglasses storage, a center console with a roll-top and removable tray, silver and matte-gray metallic interior trim, and 18-inch 5-spoke silver wheels.

The XLE goes to a 7-passenger layout, with a 10-way power driver’s seat with lumbar support, an 8-way power front passenger seat, and second-row captain’s chairs replacing the bench seats; all have SofTex upholstery. The XLE also gets heated front seats, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, smartphone-compatible Digital Key technology, wireless phone charging, a HomeLink auto-dimming rearview mirror, silver-painted roof rails, and 18-inch multi-spoke silver wheels.

The MAX Limited comes with a blend of leather and Ultrasuede upholstery, dual exhaust pipes, a silver-painted front chin spoiler, a trim-exclusive gunmetal-gray front grille, geometric-pattern interior trim in bronze and black, and 20-inch two-tone multi-spoke machined-and-black wheels. The MAX Platinum gets a power tilt-slide panoramic moonroof with power sunshade (available on the XLE, Limited, and MAX Limited), a 10-inch head-up display, a digital rearview mirror, heated and ventilated second-row seats, an LED cargo-area light, and 20-inch two-tone multi-spoke silver-and-black wheels.

Hill start control, a blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, a backup camera with dynamic gridlines, and downhill assist control (AWD only) are also found across the board. The LE and XLE get a six-speaker sound system while the higher trims receive a deluxe JBL audio system with 11 speakers, an amplifier, and a subwoofer. All trims are set up for access to Connected Services, Toyota’s connectivity suite (includes Cloud Navigation), with up to a 10-year trial subscription to Service Connect and Safety Connect.
