2025 Toyota GR86

The GR86 attracts people who seriously enjoy driving. For 2025, Gazoo Racing – Toyota’s motorsports division and source of the “GR” in the model’s name – has made some updates for enhanced driver feedback and control. The spirited sports coupe’s shock absorbers have been recalibrated to improve handling response and ground contact, and the electric power steering has been reworked for better road feel. Gazoo engineers have also revised the throttle mapping for more precise heel-toe downshifts.

The highlight of the 2025 GR86 lineup is the limited-production Hakone Edition, a unique version that pays tribute to Japan’s famed Hakone Turnpike. For the U.S. market, only 860 units of special edition are available, with Ridge Green paint and distinctive styling elements and performance upgrades.

Toyota includes a one-year National Auto Sport Association (NASA) membership with every GR86 purchase. This bonus includes entry into one of the group’s high-performance driving events. ToyotaCare is also a value-added perk for buyers of this spirited model. This complimentary program covers standard factory-scheduled maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles and 24-hour roadside assistance for two years with unlimited mileage.

Trims and Powertrain

The 2025 GR86 is offered in three variants: Base, Premium, and the limited-run Hakone Edition. All grades get their power from a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder boxer engine that makes 228 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. A six-speed manual transmission comes standard across the lineup, with a six-speed automatic offered for all trims. The automatic transmission features steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters and selectable drive modes (Normal, Sport, and Snow).

Fuel economy for automatic version is EPA-rated at 21 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, while the manual transmission returns 20 mpg around town and 26 mpg on the open road. The manual transmission GR86 weighs 2,811 pounds, while the automatic adds about 40 pounds for a total of 2,851 pounds, making the GR86 one of the lightest cars in its sporty segment.

Standard Features

The base GR86 comes with a Torsen limited-slip rear differential, a dual catback exhaust with chrome tips, manually adjustable fabric-trimmed sport seats with G-embossed fabric and sport fabric side bolsters, a 7-inch digital instrument panel, LED exterior lighting, and heated power-adjustable side mirrors. It also has foldable rear seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with tilt and telescopic adjustability, keyless entry, push-button ignition, two USB ports, and Michelin summer performance tires on 17-inch alloy wheels.

Toyota enhances the Premium trim with a blend of Ultrasuede and leather upholstery, six-way adjustable heated front seats, a duckbill rear spoiler, adaptive LED headlights that turn with the steering wheel, aluminum sport pedals, and 18-inch alloy wheels with premium Michelin summer tires. The Hakone Edition builds upon the Premium’s attributes with trim-specific Ultrasuede sport seats featuring tan leather trim and stitching, 18-inch satin bronze-finished wheels, a color-keyed duckbill rear spoiler, black exterior treatments, a special edition shift knob with bronze accents, and a GR special edition plaque. The Hakone Edition also gets standard performance-enhancing SACHS dampers and Brembo brakes (four-piston front, two-piston rear), which are available on the other trims via the Performance Package.

Advanced Driver Aids and Safety Technology

The GR86 Active Safety Suite is standard issue on all trims. It includes a pre-collision braking system, pre-collision throttle management, lead vehicle start alert, lane departure alert with sway warning, and automatic high beams. A set of seven airbags is also included, along with anti-lock brakes, stability control with a track mode, traction control, hill start assist control, and a rearview monitor with projected path guidelines. The Premium and Hakone Edition add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. GR86s with the automatic transmission receive these additional features: adaptive cruise control, rear parking sensors, and reverse automatic braking.

Infotainment and Connectivity

All trim levels of the 2025 GR86 get an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The components are wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM satellite radio, and access to Toyota Connected Services. The Base GR86 has a six-speaker audio system, while the Premium and Hakone Edition move up to an eight-speaker arrangement. Toyota offers several connected services with the GR86, including a one-year trial subscription to Safety Connect (with emergency assistance and enhanced roadside assistance), Service Connect (for maintenance updates and vehicle health reports), and Remote Connect (allowing remote interaction with the vehicle through the Toyota app via smartphone or smartwatch).
