All three Corolla Hatchback trims – SE, Nightshade, and XSE – mix sportiness and practicality in an attractive package. A high-compression 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with electronic variable valve timing backs this up. The resulting 169 horsepower is sent to the front wheels and managed by a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The EPA has estimated the first two trims’ fuel economy at 32 mpg in urban settings and 41 mpg on the interstate. The XSE’s ratings change to 30 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway. The cargo area (behind the second row) provides 17.8 cubic feet for whatever you may need to take with you.
The SE edition of the Corolla Hatchback goes beyond the essentials with proximity keyless entry, push-button start, automatic climate control (single zone), fabric upholstery, a driver-selectable sport mode, active cornering assist, LED exterior lighting with automatic headlights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters, and a rear spoiler. This trim also gets a 4.2-inch driver information display, heated power side mirrors with integrated turn indicators, a tilt-and-telescopic steering column, dual USB ports, and 16-inch alloy wheels. The Nightshade is similarly equipped but puts forth a fresh personality with black exterior treatments and 18-inch bronze-finish alloy wheels.
The XSE is uniquely upholstered with a mixed application of SofTex (leatherette) and fabric. It also adds heated front seats with sport bolsters, dual-zone automatic climate control, an eight-way power driver’s seat, LED fog lights, a 7-inch digital gauge cluster, wireless device charging, and 18-inch wheels.
All Corolla Hatchback trims are set up with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. This driver-assist suite has forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing assist, adaptive cruise control, Proactive Driving Assist (improves distance control and provides additional braking support during cornering), road sign assist, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is included with the XSE and optional on the SE and Nightshade. All trims get ten airbags, anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, Smart Stop (to minimize unintended acceleration), and a rearview monitor.
Every Corolla Hatchback boasts an 8-inch touchscreen for command of the infotainment system. It’s enhanced with a six-speaker audio system (or an eight-speaker JBL arrangement with the XSE), wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Every trim also has access to a Wi-Fi hotspot and Toyota Connected Services for emergency help, navigation, vehicle monitoring, and other features.
