Trims and Powertrains

This time around, Toyota has streamlined its Prius Prime offerings to a trio of grades: SE, XSE, and XSE Premium. Their 2.0-liter gas engine works with two electric motors to produce 220 combined horsepower. One electric motor drives the front wheels while a continuously variable transmission (CVT) manages the power.

The SE provides the aforementioned 44 miles of all-electric range, with an MPGe rating of 127. The other two trims supply 39 miles with an MPGe rating of 114. According to the EPA’s official fuel economy estimations, the ‘24 Prius Prime SE returns 53 mpg city/51 mpg highway. The XSE and XSE Premium have slightly lower ratings, achieving 50 city/47 highway. With a 120V charge, you’ll need 11 hours to fully charge the battery. A 240V charger will reduce that to 4 hours.

Standard Features

The SE mixes basic features with some upgrades, getting cloth seats, 6-way adjustable front seats, a SofTex-trimmed heated steering wheel, six USB ports (four front, two rear), a 7-inch Multi-Information Display, the Smart Key system (driver’s door only), push-button start, 60/40 split fold-down rear seats, a Level 1 charging cable for a 120V outlet, rain-sensing windshield wipers, LED daytime running lights and taillights, heated power outside mirrors with a folding feature, and 17-inch alloy wheels.

The XSE adds SofTex-trimmed heated front seats, an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support, wireless device charging, expanded Smart Key access (for both front doors and the rear hatch), a center armrest in the fold-down rear seats, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, and 19-inch alloy wheels. At the top of the lineup, the XSE Premium provides driver’s seat position memory, ventilated front seats, digital key capability, a power liftgate, and a fixed glass roof. It’s also eligible for the optional heated rear seats and a digital rearview mirror.

Advanced Driver Aids and Safety Technology

Every Prius Prime has Toyota’s Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0) system of high-tech driver-assist equipment. The included technologies are pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, steering assist, lane departure alert, lane tracing assist, automatic high beams, traffic sign recognition, proactive driving assist, blind-spot monitoring, a rearview camera, rear seat alert, front and rear cross-traffic alert, lane change assist, and traffic jam assist. Automated emergency braking with front and rear parking assist is added to the two higher trims. The available Advanced Technology Package for the XSE Premium will install a panoramic view monitor and advanced parking technology.

Infotainment and Connectivity

All 2024 Prius Primes have wireless smartphone connectivity (Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), Bluetooth, and SiriusXM satellite radio. The SE and XSE both have an 8-inch touchscreen and a six-speaker sound system. The XSE Premium upgrades to a 12.3-inch touchscreen display and a premium 8-speaker JBL sound system with an amplifier (the XSE is eligible for these upgrades as an option). Access to a Wi-Fi hotspot, Cloud Navigation, and Toyota connected services (for emergency support and remote features) comes with every grade.
