The three grades for the Prius are LE, XLE, and Limited. A new 2.0-liter gas engine and re-engineered lithium-ion battery upgrade the powertrain for the start of this fifth generation: it puts out 194 hp with front-wheel drive, and 196 hp with all-wheel drive. The battery has been downsized to save space, yet its output has increased by 15 percent. An electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (ECVT) completes the mechanical picture.
At the same time, the ’23 Prius boasts all-time-high fuel economy: the LE with FWD achieves 57 mpg around town and 56 mpg on the highway, as estimated by the EPA. The AWD LE is rated for 53 city/54 highway, while FWD versions of the XLE and Limited return 52 mpg both in the city and on the highway, and those trims with AWD get 49 city/50 highway. The operator can choose from three drive modes – Normal, Eco, and Sport – to suit the precise driving situation.
On the LE you’ll find LED exterior lighting (the headlights have auto-shutoff), proximity keyless entry (Smart Key), heated exterior mirrors, push-button start, automatic climate control, a top-mount 7-inch multi-information display, six UBS-C ports, synthetic-leather-wrap for the steering wheel, and a rear seatback that splits 60/40 and folds down. The XLE adds wireless phone charging, auto on/off headlights, rain-sensing wipers, expanded Smart Key capability, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, SofTex upholstery, heated front seats with driver’s-side power adjustability, and two cupholders for the back seat. A fixed-glass roof and Digital Key are available on both the LE and XLE, but those amenities come standard on the Limited. As the top trim, the Limited also has ventilated front seats with driver’s-side position memory; it’s also eligible for heated rear outboard seats and a digital rearview mirror.
The updated Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is installed on every 2023 Prius. The included technologies are automatic high beams, full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing assist, road sign assist, and proactive driving assist, which provides gentle braking and/or steering support in certain situations. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit warning, and a rear-seat reminder are also standard. The LE is eligible for front and rear parking sensors with reverse automatic braking, but the XLE and Limited get those amenities within their standard equipment. Limited buyers can order a panoramic view monitor and Advanced Park, Toyota’s new automated parking system.
An 8-inch touchscreen multimedia system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, and a six-speaker sound system comes standard in the first two trims. The Limited upgrades to a 12.3-inch touchscreen (this is available for the XLE) and a JBL audio system with eight speakers. All Prius grades also have access to a Wi-Fi hotspot, vehicle diagnostics, remote vehicle services, emergency safety services, and Drive Connect service, which includes Cloud Navigation with Google Points of Interest, Intelligent Assistant voice recognition, and Destination Assist.
