When you shop for the front-wheel drive 2023 Prius Prime, you can choose from three trims: SE, XSE, and XSE Premium. Their 220-horsepower plug-in hybrid powertrain combines a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with a single electric motor and an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (eCVT). The SE’s EPA-estimated electric range is 44 miles, and when the gas engine takes over, it returns 53 mpg in the city and 51 mpg on the highway. The XSE and XSE Premium can travel 39 miles per charge and achieve 50 mpg in the city and 47 mpg on the freeway.
The revamped Prius Prime is equipped with an array of top-shelf features. The SE’s highlights are auto-off LED headlights, LED daytime running lights and taillights, heated side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, proximity keyless access, push-button ignition, a tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel wrapped in SofTex synthetic leather, six USB-C charging ports, single-zone automatic climate control, a 60/40-split folding rear seatback, and a cargo-area tonneau cover.
The XSE adds auto-on LED headlights, heated SofTex-upholstered front seats with driver’s power adjustments, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, wireless phone charging, and two cupholders for the second row. This trim also qualifies for the optional fixed-glass roof and Digital Key. The XSE Premium gets both of those features as standard, along with a power liftgate, position memory for the driver’s seat, and ventilated front seats. It’s also eligible for a solar charging roof and a digital rearview mirror.
Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is a complete suite of advanced driving aids bundling a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing assist, and road sign assist. It also contains a new feature from Toyota: proactive driving assist, which offers braking and/or steering support in certain on-road situations. Every trim also receives a rear seat reminder, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit assist, and traffic jam assist.
As the higher trims, the XSE and XSE Premium both have front and rear parking sensors with automatic braking (which are available for the SE); the XSE Premium is eligible for a panoramic view monitor and Advanced Park, a seamless hands-free parking system developed by Toyota.
Both the SE and XSE are stocked with an advanced infotainment system featuring an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Bluetooth hands-free connectivity. Their audio experience is delivered through a six-speaker sound system. With the XSE Premium, the infotainment experience is boosted with a 12.3-inch touchscreen (optional for the XSE) and an upgraded eight-speaker JBL audio setup.
Toyota also includes trial subscriptions to ownership-enhancing services like Safety Connect, Remote Connect, Service Connect, and Wi-Fi Connect. You can opt for a paid subscription to unlock the Drive Connect service, which offers Cloud Navigation with Google Points-of-Interest, Intelligent Assistant voice recognition, and Destination Assist.
