Trims and Powertrain

The newly streamlined Corolla hierarchy contains the LE, SE, and XSE. The larger engine that debuts for model year 2023 is a 169-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder. Front-wheel drive and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) are still the rule in this no-nonsense four-door that’s long been appreciated for its longevity and reliability. The SE and XSE trims are both EPA-rated to achieve 31 mpg around town and 40 mpg on the open road, with the LE estimated to deliver 32 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway.

Standard Features and Options

In its first year as the base trim, the LE comes with LED exterior lighting, premium fabric upholstery, automatic climate control, a six-way adjustable driver’s seat, power side mirrors, a 60/40-split folding rear seat, a 4.2-inch driver information display, remote keyless entry, and 16-inch steel wheels with covers. It’s also eligible for the available power moonroof and proximity keyless entry (with push-button start). Those looking for a more distinctive Corolla will appreciate the SE’s distinct look, highlighted by a color-keyed rear spoiler, 18-inch alloy wheels, and a gloss black mesh grille. This trim also adds upgraded LED headlights, sport seats with sport-fabric inserts, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, and heated power side mirrors; it’s eligible for the moonroof option as well.

The XSE blends the sporty features of the SE with upgrades like a standard power moonroof, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, an upgraded instrument cluster with a 7-inch digital gauge display, SofTex seats with sport fabric inserts (heated in the front row), an eight-way power driver’s seat, and a metallic gray rear spoiler and rocker panels. This trim level’s options include wireless device charging and ambient cabin lighting.

Safety and Assistive Technology

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard across the Corolla lineup. It provides the latest advanced driver aids, including collision mitigation with pedestrian detection, proactive driving assist (for additional steering and braking support), and lane departure alert with steering assist. Adaptive cruise control, road sign assist, and automatic high beams are also standard. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on the XSE and optional on the lower trims. Every Corolla also has ten airbags, anti-lock brakes, and hill start assist control.

Infotainment and Connectivity

All Corollas come with an updated-for-2023 infotainment system with improved interactive controls. It uses an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Bluetooth connectivity. There are also two USB ports per row. A six-speaker audio system is standard on all trims, with a nine-speaker JBL arrangement available on the SE and XSE. All Corollas include access to a Wi-Fi hotspot and Toyota Connected Services. Among the numerous connection subscriptions are Drive Connect, which offers Cloud Navigation and Destination Assist.
