Toyota offers the 2023 4Runner in an abundance of trims, ensuring that there’s a version for every preference and a variety of budgets. Buyers can choose from the SR5, TRD Sport, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, 40th Anniversary Special Edition, Limited, and TRD Pro. All 4Runners have a 4.0-liter V6 that makes 270 horsepower and 278 lb.-ft. of torque and is connected to a five-speed automatic transmission. The maximum towing capacity is 5,000 pounds.
Rear-wheel drive (RWD) is standard on the SR5, TRD Sport, SR5 Premium, and Limited. These trims can be upgraded with four-wheel drive (4WD), which comes standard on the TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, 40th Anniversary, and TRD Pro. The 2023 4Runner is EPA-rated to achieve 16 mpg around town and 19 mpg on the open road, regardless of the drivetrain.
Buyers choosing the SR5 will get a 4Runner with LED exterior lighting, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, manual air conditioning, an eight-way power driver’s seat, a power rear liftgate window, rear privacy glass, fabric upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated power side mirrors, roof rails, front and rear mudguards, and 17-inch alloy wheels. The TRD Sport adds SofTex upholstery, an eight-way power driver’s seat with power lumbar controls, a hood scoop, and 20-inch wheels. Moving up the lineup is the SR5 Premium with its heated front seats, heated power side mirrors with integrated turn signal-indicators, a four-way power front passenger seat, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and 17-inch wheels.
The TRD Off-Road is similarly equipped to the SR5 and adds additional drive modes (Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control), a locking rear differential, and active traction control. The TRD Off-Road Premium has the same features as the SR5 Premium plus the additional driving equipment of the TRD Off-Road. The visually distinct 40th Anniversary Special Edition gets most of the features from the SR5 Premium plus a power moonroof, bronze-colored upholstery accents, unique exterior accents and graphics, and 17-inch bronze-colored alloy wheels.
The Limited takes a slightly different approach with an exclusive full-time 4WD system (other 4WD-equipped 4Runners use the more traditional part-time setup) and modified suspension for a smoother driving experience. It’s the most luxurious trim, getting leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, a power moonroof, dual-zone climate control, a driver’s position memory system, 20-inch wheels, and more infotainment technology (which is described below). At the top of the 4Runner range, the TRD Pro has all of the standard equipment listed for the TRD Off-Road Premium plus an upgraded suspension, a power moonroof, Fox shock absorbers, 17-inch matte-black alloy wheels with all-terrain tires, and a trim-specific roof rack.
There are numerous options and packages available to those who order the 2023 4Runner. The most notable of these upgrades are running boards, a 50/50-split folding third-row seat (SR5, SR5 Premium, and Limited), and a power moonroof (SR5 Premium and TRD Off-Road Premium).
All 4Runners come with Toyota Safety Sense P (collision mitigation with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, adaptive cruise control, road sign assist, and automatic high beams). All trims except for the 40th Anniversary also get blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. The Limited adds front and rear parking sensors; a surround-view monitor is optional on the SR5 Premium, TRD Sport, and TRD Off-Road Premium and standard on the Limited and TRD Pro. Every trim gets vehicle stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, and eight airbags.
An 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system is standard fare on each trim. Its base components are Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM satellite radio, USB ports, Bluetooth connectivity, Amazon Alexa compatibility, and access to a Wi-Fi hotspot and Toyota Connected Services. An eight-speaker sound system is standard on the SR5, TRD Sport, and TRD Off-Road, but these trims can be upgraded with navigation and a 15-speaker JBL audio system (those features are standard on the remaining grades).
