The Corolla is one of those cars that seems to have touched everyone’s life in one way or another. It’s been around for so long that, even if you’ve never owned one, you’ve likely ridden in one. The nameplate has adorned everything from the traditional four-door sedan to the latest model, a compact utility vehicle called the Corolla Cross. But for many folks, the favorite is the Corolla Hatchback, with its youthful appeal and added versatility with cargo: it supplies 17.8 cubic feet of cargo space and 84.6 cu. ft. of passenger volume. The 2022 version offers plenty of standard equipment, including a complete slate of advanced safety technologies and everything you need to stay connected and entertained on the road. Let’s take a closer look at this deservedly popular vehicle.

Trims and Performance

There are three grade levels for the ‘22 Corolla Hatchback: the SE, SE Nightshade Edition, and XSE. They have a powertrain that consists of a 168 hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Official EPA estimates state that the SE and SE Nightshade Edition achieve 32 mpg around town and 41 mpg during highway driving. The XSE weighs more since it carries more standard features, and so its fuel economy is slightly lower at 30 city/38 highway.

Standard Features by Trim

The base-level SE doesn’t skimp on equipment, getting standard LED headlights (auto on/off) and daytime running lights, auto high beams, automatic climate control, a drive-mode selector, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters, heated exterior mirrors with integrated turn-signal indicators, a split-folding (60/40) back seat with a foldaway armrest, and 16-inch wheels. The SE Nightshade Edition gets a different exterior look with black elements, including the 18-inch wheels. The XSE upgrades to dual-zone automatic climate control, leather seats (heated in the front row), and 18-inch machine-finished wheels; blind-spot warning indicators are also added to its exterior mirrors. A wireless smartphone charger is available.

Advanced Safety Technology

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard on the Corolla Hatchback, adding a comprehensive lineup of the latest driver-assist technologies. It contains automatic high beams, full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, road sign assist, and lane tracing assist. A blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on the XSE and optional on the SE.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Every Corolla Hatchback gets USB charging ports and a 12V outlet. The base infotainment system has an 8-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth (hands-free phone use and audio streaming), smartphone integration (Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), Amazon Alexa, SiriusXM satellite radio (with a complimentary three-month trial), and a sound system with six speakers. XSE buyers can opt to add navigation and voice recognition along with an upgrade to a JBL sound system with two more speakers.
