2021 Toyota 4Runner for Sale in Warwick, RI
The term “sport utility vehicle” is used a lot these days, but there are few true SUVs remaining. Most of what automakers label “SUV” these days are actually crossovers: rather than being built on a truck platform with four-wheel drive, they’re more carlike. They “cross over” from standard passenger car to utility vehicle, ending up somewhere in between, built with less-rugged unibody construction and with front-wheel or all-wheel drive as opposed to 4WD. But the Toyota 4Runner is a real 4×4 and an undeniably an old-school SUV. Its legions of fans love it for its off-road capabilities, long-running toughness, and classic Toyota build quality. 4Runner aficionados are glad to accept a little less plushness in favor of actual brawn.
The 4Runner hasn’t had to change much since its 1984 debut. It has all the desired technologies, of course, but it hasn’t needed to evolve much in appearance – and it’s still built body-on-frame with rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. The 2021 model year brings with it a new version called the Trail Special Edition, as well as standard LED headlights for all trim levels.
With its new addition, the trim lineup for the 4Runner now totals nine: the SR5, Trail Special Edition, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Venture Special Edition, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, and TRD Pro. They get a powertrain consisting of a 4.0-liter V6 (270 hp and 278 lb.-ft. of torque) and a five-speed automatic transmission. The TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Venture Special Edition, and TRD Pro all come only as 4x4s, but buyers of the other trims have a choice of the standard rear-wheel drive or available 4WD. A 2021 4Runner can tow up to 5,000 pounds when it’s properly equipped with the factory trailer hitch.
Standard and Available Features
The no-nonsense SR5 starts off the trim lineup with standard LED headlights, taillights, and fog lights, plus roof rails, heated exterior mirrors, and 17-inch wheels. Occupants can plug in with four USB ports, two 12V DC power outlets, a 120V AC power outlet. A third-row bench seat is offered to accommodate two additional passengers. The Trail Special Edition upgrades its roof rails with a Yakima rack, and it also gets a built-in cooler for the cargo area, plus dark exterior trim and wheels. The SR5 Premium receives durable SofTex faux leather, heated front seats, upgraded outside mirrors with built-in turn signal indicators, Smart Key, push-button ignition, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
Fans of trail riding should go for the TRD Off-Road, with its active traction control, locking rear differential, and terrain mode selector. The TRD Off-Road Premium runs the middle ground between dirt-demon and comfort with the trail-specific attributes of the regular TRD Off-Road, an available Kinetic Dynamic Suspension, and some more plush interior features. The Venture Special Edition gets the same Yakima roof rack as the Trail Special Edition, along with all-terrain tires on grey TRD wheels, plus some black trim.
The Limited moves up to 20-inch wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather seats with heat and ventilation in the front row, automatic headlights, a sunroof, and some eye-catching exterior chrome. The Nightshade Special Edition gets the same features, but its wheels and exterior elements are blacked out. The TRD Pro is the off-road fan’s holy grail, with its classic TOYOTA grille and trail-ready features, including TRD alloy wheels, all-terrain tires, Fox dampers, skid plate, and trim-specific roof rack.
Safety and Technology
The base infotainment system has an 8-inch touchscreen, smartphone integration (Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, and an eight-speaker audio system with SiriusXM satellite radio. The SR5 Premium and higher and navigation and HD radio. The Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, and TRD Pro all get a top-shelf JBL audio system with 15 speakers.
All ’21 4Runners are set up with the Toyota Safety Sense P package of driver-assist technologies: automatic high beams, pre-collision braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, and adaptive radar cruise control. The Limited and Nightshade Special Edition also get front and rear sonar parking assist.
