2019 Toyota 4Runner

Overview

The rugged and dependable Toyota 4Runner has enjoyed a loyal following for more than three decades for very good reason. Its good looks have never wavered, nor has its dependability factor. In the 2019 model year, this popular SUV has even more to offer, including a new trim level called the Nightshade Special Edition. The 4Runner is a traditional body-on-frame 4×4 with a generous 9.6 inches of ground clearance. A tow-hitch receiver comes standard; the maximum capacity is 5,000 pounds.

Trims and Standard Features

The ’19 4Runner is offered in seven trim levels: SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited Nightshade Edition, and TRD Pro. They all get a 270 horsepower 4.0-liter V6 paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. The drivetrain options are rear-wheel drive with automatic limited-slip differential and part-time four-wheel drive, or full-time 4WD with Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) and Torsen locking limited-slip center differential. Across the trim lineup, the EPA-rated fuel economy is 17 mpg around town and 20 to 21 on the open road.

Standard features on the base SR5 include a backup camera, projector-beam headlights, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat. The SR5 Premium adds heated power side mirrors with integrated turn-signal indicators, and an upgraded Entune Audio system with navigation. The extra-tough TRD Off-Road gets special badging, plus features for the trail: a locking rear differential, hill start assist, multi-terrain Select, and Crawl Control; the TRD Off-Road Premium adds SofTex seats that are heated and power-adjustable in the front row.

For the ultimate in trail-ready features, the TRD Off-Road Pro is set up with FOX Shocks, TRD-tuned front springs, and high-performance fog lights. This trim has a throwback look, with its TOYOTA-emblazoned grille (rather than the logo) and deep roof rack. The Nightshade Special Edition tops off the trim lineup with a premium JBL audio system, a power moonroof, leather seats that are heated and ventilated, front and rear parking assist sonar, and black elements inside and out: 20-inch split-spoke wheels, mirrors, door handles, roof rails, rocker panels, and more.

Safety and Technology

Toyota has built a lot of passenger protection into the 4Runner’s body, with side-impact beams, a suite of eight airbags, and active headrests. The Star Safety System bundles stability control, traction control, and various braking technologies. Advanced driver assist features, including parking assist sonar and blind spot monitor, are available on higher trims.

The Entune Audio Plus comes standard with a 6.1-inch high-resolution, eight speakers, Bluetooth capability, voice recognition, and SiriusXM satellite radio. More features, such as integrated navigation, are added as the trim level rises, with the TRD Pro and Limited trims getting the loaded version of this infotainment system (premium JBL Audio, iPod connectivity, 15 speakers, and more).
